George Clooney watch shopping in Tokyo

01 August 2007

Hollywood star George Clooney stopped by Tokyo this week, to attend a publicity event for watch maker Omega.

The actor, who is a favourite with the females, spent time in the capital's Nicholas G Hayek Centre in the exclusive Ginza shopping district, where he assembled an Omega watch with the help of a Japanese technician and posed for photographers.

Sporting a fancy Omega watch, the 46-year old was back to looking his finest. In 2005, he gained nearly three stone for his Oscar wining portrayal of an under-appreciated CIA agent in the politically charged film 'Syriana'.

The actor and director made his career in medical television drama 'ER', before going on to star in 'Ocean's Eleven' and its two sequels, as well as such well received films as 'Three Kings', 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' and 'The Perfect Storm'.

Clooney has recently been spending time at his home in Lake Como, in Italy, where he is editing his latest film, romantic comedy 'Leatherheads'.

Omega launches 'fine jewellery' line in India

BANGALORE: Watchmaker Omega introduced a new jewellery range under the brand name ‘Omega fine jewellery’ in India today. Brand ambassador and Bollywood film actor and TV host Sonali Bendre Behl was present at the launch in Bangalore last night.
The four lines that were launched are Griffes – modern representation of claws and clasps; Omegamania – symbolizing perfection; Sedna – symbolizing the galaxy of stars; and the Aqua collection – depicting the gentle rhythm of the waves. The price range of the offerings are from Rs 40,000 to Rs 4,00,000.Unveiling the collection Bendre said: "Omega's Fine Jewellery line displays the same elegance as Omega watches. Each piece that I have seen, be it rings, necklaces, earrings or even cufflinks, is a unique fusion of classy chic and technical quality."
According to Omega brand manager P H Narayanan, Omega is testing the waters and if these offerings are well accepted then it will bring in more expensive jewellery.
Narayanan informed that a national media campaign would commence shortly for promotion of the jewelry range across niche and fashion magazines. The creative work, including work involving Indian brand ambassadors is arranged for by the parent company, and Mindshare is responsible for the media duties in India.

More than 50 per cent of Omega’s products including watches are for women, according to Narayanan.
The brand Omega currently targets a young generation that identifies with the World of Omega: a world of achievements with the conquest of space (the Speedmaster Professional is the only watch to have been worn on the moon), the timekeeping at 22 Olympic Games, numerous precision records and design awards.
Omega’s world is epitomised by high-profile watches worn by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Cindy Crawford, Michael Schumacher, Ernie Els, Michael Phelps, Sonali Bendre-Behl, and Abhishek Bachchan. Omega will be official timekeeper for the Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

Richemont Sales Rise as Russians, Chinese Buy Watches

Cie. Financiere Richemont AG, the world's second-biggest luxury-goods company, said first-quarter revenue rose 9.1 percent as Russian and Chinese shoppers bought Mont Blanc and Piaget watches costing as much as $2 million.

Sales climbed to 1.27 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in the three months through June from 1.16 billion euros a year earlier, the Geneva-based company said today on its Web site. Revenue growth excluding currency movements matched the 15 percent median estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Richemont, the maker of Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC watches, has benefited from increased demand for the priciest timepieces. Swiss exports of watches worth more than 3,000 Swiss francs ($2,500) rose 27 percent last year, compared with 17 percent growth for models costing more than 1,500 francs. Some clients must wait as long as a year for delivery because of the number of orders.

``This outcome is encouraging for the rest of the year,'' Constanza Mardones, an analyst at Citigroup in London with a ``buy'' recommendation on the company's shares, said of the figures. There's ``no sign of a slowdown'' in Asia, she said.

Richemont shares fell 40 centimes, or 0.5 percent, to 77.1 Swiss francs in Zurich, rebounding from an earlier drop of as much as 2.6 percent. The stock had slid after sales gains including currencies missed the survey's 10 percent median estimate because of declines by the dollar and yen that wiped 6 percent from revenue growth.

A Third of Revenue

``The foreign-exchange impact was a bit stronger than expected,'' said Urs Diethelm, an analyst at Bank Sal. Oppenheim Jr. & Cie. in Zurich with a ``buy'' rating on Richemont stock.

The luxury-goods maker gets about a third of revenue from the Americas and Japan, leaving it vulnerable to declines by the dollar and yen against the euro. The yen on average was 12 percent lower against the single european curency in the quarter compared with a year earlier, and the dollar was 6.7 percent lower.

Premium watches generate about half of sales at Richemont, the maker of Purdey shotguns, according to Yasuhiro Yamaguchi, an analyst at UBS AG in London who rates the stock ``buy.'' The company announced quarterly sales for the first time today, rather than just revenue growth, because of new regulations requiring more financial disclosure.

Russians are spending more money on luxury goods as the country's economy expands for a ninth year in a row, stoked by higher energy and metals prices. The government probably will raise its forecast for this year's growth to 7 percent from 6.5 percent, Economy Minister German Gref said in June. Clothier Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. opened its first Moscow stores in May.

`Booming' Exports

``Swiss watch exports to Russia are booming this year,'' Rene Weber, an analyst at Bank Vontobel in Zurich who gives Richemont an ``outperform'' rating, said before the figures were released. ``Russians are increasingly buying more expensive watches.''

First-quarter sales rose 18 percent to 367 million euros at Richemont's watch unit, whose products include diamond-encrusted Piaget timepieces costing as much as $2 million. Excluding currencies, revenue advanced 24 percent.

Sales gained 6 percent to 638 million euros at the company's jewelry division, its largest by revenue. Declines by the dollar and yen cut sales growth by half. Revenue advanced 9 percent at the company's pen-making subsidiary and gained 2 percent at its leather-goods and accessories unit.

Sales in Japan fell 7 percent when calculated in euros and advanced 5 percent in yen. Revenue rose 10 percent in the Americas in dollars and gained 3 percent in euros. Sales advanced 20 percent in Asia outside Japan and 28 percent excluding currencies. Revenue climbed 13 percent in Europe.

Chief Executive Officer Norbert Platt said May 24 he didn't expect the yen or dollar to strengthen significantly in coming weeks or months. Richemont can't offset the currency effect entirely by raising prices because that would damage its brands, he said.

Omega Watch Company History

The Omega DeVille Co Axial Chronograph
The Omega DeVille Co Axial Chronograph

Founded at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1848 by 23-year-old Louis Brandt who assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. He travelled throughout Europe selling his watches from Italy to Scandinavia by way of England, his chief market. After Louis Brandt's death in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar, troubled by irregular deliveries of questionable quality, abandoned the unsatisfactory assembly workshop system in favour of in-house manufacturing and total production control. Due to the greater supply of manpower, communications and energy in Bienne, the enterprise moved into a small factory in January 1880, then bought the entire building in December. Two years later the company moved into a converted spinning-factory in the Gurzelen district of Bienne, where headquarters are still situated today. Their first series-produced calibres, Labrador and Gurzelen, as well as, the famous Omega calibre of 1894, would ensure the brand's marketing success.

Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt both died in 1903, leaving one of Switzerland's largest watch companies - with 240,000 watches produced annually and employing 800 people - in the hands of four young people, the oldest of whom, Paul-Emile Brandt, was not yet 24. Considered to be the great architect and builder of OMEGA, Paul-Emile's influence would be felt over the next half-century. The economic difficulties brought on by the First World War would lead him to work actively from 1925 toward the union of OMEGA and Tissot, then to their merger in 1930 within the group SSIH, Geneva. Under his leadership, then that of Joseph Reiser beginning in 1955, the SSIH Group continued to grow and multiply, absorbing or creating some fifty companies. By the seventies, SSIH had become Switzerland's number one producer of finished watches and number three in the world.

Weakened by the severe monetary crisis and recession of 1975 to 1980, SSIH was bailed out by the banks in 1981. During this period, Seiko expressed interest in acquiring Omega, but nothing came out of the talks. Switzerland's other watchmaking giant ASUAG, principal producer of movement blanks and owner of the Longines, Rado and Swatch brands, was saved in similar fashion one year later. After drastic financial cleansing and a restructuring of the two groups' R&D and production operations at the ETA complex in Granges, the two giants merged in 1983 to form the Holding ASUAG-SSIH. In 1985 the holding company was taken over by a group of private investors under the strategy and leadership of Nicolas Hayek. Immediately renamed SMH, Société suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie, the new group achieved rapid growth and success to become today's top watch producer in the world. Named Swatch Group in 1998, it now includes Blancpain and Breguet. Dynamic and flourishing, OMEGA remains one of its most prestigious flagship brands.

Omega watches in space exploration

The Omega Speedmaster, the legendary Moonwatch, selected by NASA for all the Apollo missions

The selection of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph as the official watch worn by American astronauts was the subject of a famous space-race era rivalry between Omega and Bulova.

All subsequent manned NASA missions also utilized this hand wound movement wristwatch. NASA started selecting the chronograph in the early 60's and automatic chronograph wristwatches were not available until 1969.

However all the instrument panel clocks and time-keeping mechanisms in the spacecraft on those space missions were Bulova Accutrons with tuning fork movements, because at the time, NASA did not know how well a mechanical movement would work in zero gravity conditions.

First watch on the moon

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch on the Moon worn on the wrists of Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin. Unfortunately this historically notable watch is now considered lost. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin mentions in his book "Return to Earth" that when donating several items to the Smithsonian Institution, his Omega was one of the few things that was stolen from his personal effects.[1]

Movements and the Co-axial Escapement

In 1999 Omega made history by introducing the first mass-produced watch incorporating the revolutionary Co-axial escapement - invented by English watchmaker George Daniels. Considered by many to be one of the most significant horological advancements since the invention of the lever escapement, the co-axial escapement functions with virtually no lubrication thereby eliminating one of the shortcomings of the traditional lever escapement. Through utilizing radial friction instead of sliding friction at the impulse surfaces the co-axial escapement significantly reduces friction, theoretically resulting in longer service intervals and greater accuracy over time.[2]

On January 24th 2007 OMEGA unveiled its Calibre 8500 and 8501, two movements of completely in house design featuring the Co Axial escapement. These movements feature a bi-directional rotor, two barrels that provide the watch with a power reserve of 60 hours, and they are COSC certified.[3]

Omega has been associated with the famous James Bond movie franchise since 1995. That year, Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond, and the producers wanted to update the image of the fictional "super-spy" to a more distinctly sophisticated "Euro" look.[4]

Another reason for the change from the Rolex Submariner watches that Bond previously used to wear is the change in the business environment that surrounds modern high-profile films. Omega was amenable to participating in high profile co-promotions and product placements in the movies (something that the conservative Rolex company avoids).[5]

Its Seamaster 300M Professional Chronometer is the current official James Bond watch, used by Pierce Brosnan in each of his Bond movies since, but not including, GoldenEye. In the GoldenEye film, the quartz Seamaster 300M Professional was featured.[6]

For the 40th Anniversary of James Bond (2002) a special commerative edition of the watch was made available where only 10,007 units were produced. The watch is identical to the model: 2531.80.00 except the blue watch face had a 007 logo inscribed across it. The band also had 007 inscribed on the clasp.[7]

Daniel Craig, the current James Bond of the film "Casino Royale" also wears the Omega Seamaster. In the film, he wears two different models, the Seamaster Planet Ocean in the first part of the film, and in the latter part (from travelling to Montenegro), he wears the "official" Bond-watch, the Seamaster Professional 300M. In connection with the launch of the film, Omega released a special 007-special of the Professional 300M, featuring the 007-gun logo on the second hand and the rifle pattern on the watch face. The face design being a stylized representation of the iconic gunbarrel sequence of Bond movies.[8]

Omega has also released another James Bond limited edition watch in 2006, a Seamaster Planet Ocean (limited production of 5007 units), similar to what Craig wears earlier on in the film, with a discrete 007-logo integrated on the second hand.[9]

Omega watches in other popular media

  • Top Gear host and celebrity Jeremy Clarkson wore an Omega Seamaster Professional James Bond watch for a few years until due to lack of service it started acting erratically; he recently replaced the watch with a new large size Omega Planet Ocean.
  • NCIS actor Michael Weatherly aka. Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo used to wear a Rolex Submariner at the outset of the show but has since switched his timepiece of choice to the Omega Planet Ocean with the orange bezel.
  • In the movie War of the Worlds, actor Tom Cruise wore a vintage Omega chronograph that stopped running when the aliens first started to attack.
  • David James Elliott aka. Commander Harmon Rabb Jr. wears an Omega Seamaster Professional Diver in television series JAG.
